What Is the Parent Education & Family Stabilization Course?
Under Florida Statute 61.21, the Parent Education & Family Stabilization Course is a mandatory four-hour educational program for many parents involved in a dissolution of marriage proceeding with minor children or in paternity actions involving parental responsibility.
The purpose of the course is to educate parents about the impact that divorce, separation, and family restructuring can have on children. Rather than focusing solely on legal requirements, the course emphasizes practical parenting strategies that help children adjust to family changes while encouraging cooperation between parents.
This course has been approved by the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) and satisfies the educational requirements established by the State of Florida.
Who Is Required to Take This Course?
This course is generally required for parents involved in family law matters that include minor children, including:
Divorce (Dissolution of Marriage)
Paternity Actions
Cases involving parental responsibility
Cases involving parenting plans or time-sharing
Other family law matters when ordered by the court
In most situations, each parent must complete the course separately unless otherwise ordered by the court.
If you have questions regarding your individual case, you should review your court order or consult your attorney.
Why Does Florida Require This Course?
Florida recognizes that divorce and separation affect not only parents but also children. Research has consistently shown that children adjust more successfully when parents are able to reduce conflict, communicate respectfully, and remain focused on their children's emotional and developmental needs.
The Parent Education & Family Stabilization Course was created to help parents:
Understand how divorce affects children at different developmental stages
Learn strategies to reduce the impact of family conflict
Improve communication between co-parents
Support children's emotional well-being
Promote healthy co-parenting relationships
Create stable, consistent environments for children
The course is educational in nature and is designed to provide parents with information and practical skills that can be applied throughout the parenting journey.
